BexAta Animal Sanctuary, Inc. was established for the benefit of a variety of farm and domestic animals, including sheep, goats, dogs, cats, birds, poultry, pot belly pigs.  We are a rescue in that we rehome some animals, but we are a sanctuary in that some will be with us for the remainder of their lives.   Some animals are not adoptable, but deserve a life of love, kindness, care, comfort and respect.

Many thanks to Mary Walker and Farah for BexAta's  first donation.

While we have been doing rescue work for decades, we became an official non-profit 501(c)(3) animal sanctuary on July 28, 2009.
BexAta primarily rescues small livestock (sheep and goats), birds and working livestock guardian dog breeds, but also the occasional cat, all types of fowl, and whatever else we can manage to support on our small ranch.  With each animal that is adopted from BexAta, we provide a wealth of information on care and maintenance so that the experience is a good one for both owner and animal.    We try to educate everyone, but realize that people forget things.  Therefore, we are available by phone or email at any time to answer any questions and assist in any way possible.   No question is a stupid question except the one that isn't asked, so please do not hesitate to call or email.  We work hard to provide each animal with a habitat and training suitable to its breed and type and to educate the public as to the needs of each breed and type. Our goal is to build and maintain a shelter for said animals and prepare them for adoption whenever possible or to allow them to live out the remainder of their lives with proper shelter, food,  water and veterinary care, as befits their individual breeds and species, and to provide for the continued use and maintenance of the property as an animal sanctuary.   We promote public education and responsible pet ownership advocating spay/neuter and proper breed and specie specific environments.  For example, a working livestock guard dog breed is not adopted out to an apartment or a home with a small yard.  We educate the public and promote responsible pet ownership by potential adopters and owners by explaining the needs of each breed or species.  If we don't have that information immediately at hand, we access it from the internet.  However, after sixteen years, we are pretty well versed in development of various breeds and what they were bred to do.   That way we can explain and provide the best match.  If we don't have a suitable animal, then we always endorse a visit to another shelter/rescue that may have something more suitable to the family's lifestyle.

Meet a feral cat adopted from a Feral cat colony rescue group  to work as a barn cat.  She has been here since February 17, 2009 and has had her first day of freedom.
While this is an animal sanctuary, we cannot have a barn full of mice eating the feed.  She is not a pet, but rather a working cat and is spayed.

Pictured March 23, 2009 - the door was opened today on her giant wire kennel.

Miss Kitty is another spayed barn cat in residence at BexAta having come from a rescue situation. She is very content inside or on top of the barn surveying her domain.   Miss Kitty is the ideal barn cat and is touchable on occasion.  She is content to do her job and has kept pigeons from roosting and mice from settling in the feed barn.

Snowman came to BexAta when his owners' children couldn't deal with the noise he made.  He lives a very contented life at BexAta with lots of toys and multiple bird "friends" surrounding him.
Goats and sheep  are often surrendered to BexAta when families are forced to move because of the economy or people just can't take care of them.  They find a lovely pasture for grazing and plenty of fresh water and grain.

Bubba is a working livestock guard dog who came to BexAta with his ear badly torn.  His breeder allowed her daughter's Boston Terrier to drag the Anatolian pups around by the ears.   Bubba had no ear canal and required reconstructive surgery.   Today he is happy guarding and protecting his goats.

Pictured is a 3-legged goat.  She received veterinary care (amputation)  and lives a normal life at BexAta.

Bexata is also focusing on Greyhounds.

Bexata Animal Sanctuary, Inc. is a non-profit corporation founded in 2009 as a private animal sanctuary which has evolved into a private Greyhound rescue. Our purpose is to find homes for young, racing schooled Greyhounds and to educate the public on the suitability and availability of Greyhounds as pets. Our mission is motivated by a thorough understanding of the breed and the environmental characteristics that help the breed excel alongside their human handlers. To that end, we offer public adoption events, an informative website, and one-on-one attention via telephone and e-mail to help new owners of our Greyhounds learn how to transition their new pets into their families. Because of our extensive background, we have a keen understanding of the type of pet owners that would be best suited for ownership of the breed and work hard to make these matches. Bexata works with rescues as far away as California to do its best to ensure each Greyhound without a home can find a permanent place they too can call their own.
